DECEMBER

40 lat Warsaw - in honour of the 40th anniversary of Willy Brandt's visit in Warsaw, on December 7, 2010 the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Poland and the Center for International Relations jointly organized the conference “Europe:
A Continent of Reconciliation?”. The conference highlighted the significance of Chancellor Brandt's New Eastern Policy for the reconciliation between Poles and Germans. Both the principle of transformation through closer ties and the European road to reconciliation remain relevant to this very day. Indeed, they offer a model for regional conflicts around the entire globe.

NOVEMBER

Over November 22-23, 2010 the first “Spanish-Polish Policy Dialogue” meeting was held in Madrid. This meeting was organized through the cooperation of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the Spanish foundation IDEAS. Young politicians from Poland and Spain took part in the workshops. They discussed the opportunities for active Polish-Spanish cooperation at the European Union level, and exchanged their views and positions on the most vital issues before Europe, including that of a common European foreign and security policy, the matters of migration and integration, and the way the past is to be handled. These workshops will be continued in a similar format in the upcoming year.
Klub Polityczny For the third time now the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung extended invitations to a meeting within the series called "The Political Club", the aim of which is to discuss current political issues. The special guest this time was Dietmar Nietan, member of the Bundestag and chairman of the Federal League of German-Polish societies. The discussion was led by Agnieszka Wi¶niewska, editor of the leftist journal Krytyka Polityczna.

OCTOBER

kommunalpolitik How to establish and sustain effective communication between citizens and local activists? How to present political endeavours and their results in the language society speaks? And - how can local politicians obtain additional competencies and ever upgrade their professional skills? With these questions in mind the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Warsaw, in cooperation with the Szkoła Liderów (Leadership School), hosted from October 15th  to 17th (2010) a Polish-German seminar entitled "Effective local politics".

konspiratorki Women were a pillar of the Polish resistance movement during the years ofGerman occupation. In particular during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, when women notonly performed civil functions as messengers and paramedics, but actually fought incombat against the German occupation force. The history of those women is brought tolight in the documentary film "Konspirantinnen" (Conspirators) by the German director Paul Meyer. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung presented the film at Warsaw's Talking History Place (Haus der Begegnung mit Geschichte) on October1.

SEPTEMBER

sd_konferenz European Social Democracy in the 21st century.
Social democracy in Europe is clearly in crisis. Only ten years ago social democrats headed a majority of governments in Europe, but now social democratic parties are in power in just 4 of the EU's 27 member countries. That was the topic of the international conference "Finding new answers: Social democracy in 21st-century Europe" organized by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in co-operation with the weekly Polityka on September 28.

Kom_DanzigHow election campaigns evolved over the recent years? Which channels can be used to reach the voters? How do voters make their decisions? No matter if it is in Poland or Germany all the politicians must answer this question if they want to run a successful election campaign and get elected. In order to learn from one another and together the Friedrich Ebert Foundation organized over the period of 2-4 July a Municipal Academy in the City of Gdańsk. link more info

JUNE

Willy_BrandtThe Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the European Solidarity Centre and the German Consulate General presented the exhibition “Willy Brandt and Poland”. Visitors can learn about the German federal government head's life and work in the ground floor of the New City Hall at 1, Wały Jagiellońskie in Gdańsk.

V_und_PIn June, a collection of studies edited by Friedhelm Boll, Wiesław Wysocki and Klaus Ziemer "Reconciliation and politics: Polish-German reconciliation initiatives in the 1960s and the policy of detente" was published in Polish. The publication of the book was an occasion for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation to hold a panel discussion in the seat of the Conference of Polish Bishops. Time witnesses and scholars discussed the relationship between civil social reconciliation initiatives and the policy of detente of the 1960s.link more info

On 27 May, at the invitation of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Foundation "Przestrzenie Dialogu", politicians, academics and civil society representatives came together for a discussion on prospects for sustainable development in the metropolitan region of Silesia. link more info
2BalkoneAfter the fall of the Warsaw Uprising the Germans deported 160 000 men, women and children from Warsaw to labour and concentration camps. Remembering that the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Warsaw office together with the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising staged a show of a film called "2 Balkone" for 70 German and Polish school students followed by a discussion with the protagonists of the film on their reminiscences. link more info
Schuman_ParadeWarsaw, 8 May 2010 - Experience the European idea and promote cultural exchange. This is the motto of the Schuman Parade, an event staged in Warsaw every year in May. The event is named after French foreign minister Robert Schuman, whose 9 May 1950 project for a new design of Europe laid the foundations for a future European Union. link more info
CohnOn Friday, 7th of May, the memorial tablet for Willy Cohn, a historian and socialdemocrate, was unveiled in Breslau. Knut Dethlefsen, director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Poland, underlined how important it is not just to discuss about history but also to take responsibility for what happened in the past. link more info

Vilnius Vilnius - What interests have the countries around the Baltic? Is there a way to reshuffle such interests as a network? What latent potential is there in such co-operation? These questions were discussed by social democrats and union representatives from countries around the Baltic - Poland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark and Sweden - at a Friedrich Ebert Foundation conference called "New Economic Thinking - economic growth and social security around the Baltic" on 15 April 2010 in Vilnius. link more info
